Two upcoming events that give a fascinating insight to tunnels and trains are seemingly both interesting and theatrical. Oldham Coliseum hopes to offer something cool with the hard work and organisation that’s been put into this. In our fourth blog of the week, it’s all about young people’s theatre and Project Sub

Theatre, trains and Oldham

Project Sub is a performance about the crossing lives of passengers on a train as embark on their morning journey. It is a small touring performance which has been devised by eight young people. However, this is a sister project of Tunnel Vision, created by the Coliseum’s TheatreLab and DigiLab group. Tunnel Vision is a digital installation piece based on the story of the unused Lydgate Tunnel, which ran from Oldham to Huddersfield. This takes later on in the month after the performance, so if you’re interested then Tunnel Vision is taking place at Earl Mill on 27 and 28 April and can be booked through the Coliseum Theatre’s box office on 0161 624 2829.

As for the performance, Project Sub is based off some of the ideas from Tunnel Vision. Young people have worked towards the creation of characters and their backstories to create a short piece examining perception and how people interact, how relationships form and what is really going on in the lives of the people we see every day on our way to school or work.

Carly Henderson, one of the members of the Project Sub team, had lovely things to say about it:

“The quality of the work the young people have devised has been extremely impressive. They’ve worked on naturalism and how to present their character in a public setting, hinting at subtle flaws and insights into their stories, which leaves you wanting to know more.”

And this for Easter:

“Me and my friends usually get together for bank holiday in Liverpool and probably a hot pot at Mum’s on Easter Monday. Great times indeed!”

The show lasts approximately 15mins and will be taking place at the following locations on Monday 2 April:

Oldham Library 10am

Fitton Hill Library 1pm

Failsworth Library 3.30pm

This is the final preview of the week everyone. The new centre has finally opened with an immense launch party to help it gain as much recognition as possible, and now there’s plenty to do at Mahdlo!

Mahdlo's state-of-the-art centre on the party night

With a massive seven-page spread in the Chronicle, Mahdlo has been the talk of the town before, during and after the cool launch party. I went down on that special Saturday evening as a guest, and as soon as I got there, so many young people of various ages with their parents turned up and formed a mile-long queue practically; eluded with the huge amount of attendees. It seems like the teams behind Mahdlo have done a fantastic job building up the momentum and hype surrounding the £5million centre, now there are endless possibilities for young people and Mahdlo.

All That Magazine made a special appearance

Why does it all matter to young people? There’s just so much to do at Mahdlo in general! They’ve informed us about their Easter holiday programme which involves an array of activities to get involved in.

So many yellow shirts! You can opt to be a volunteer as they're looking, checkout the site for more details

Everything is going to take place at Mahdlo Youth Zone, situated on Egerton St, Oldham, postcode is OL1 3SE. Every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday from 2 April – 13 April, an abundance of activities await. These include Easter arts and crafts, jewellery making, sports, indoor rock climbing, console gaming, table tennis, drama, dance and utilisation of the fitness suite.

You know you want to lads

Mahdlo says “they hope as many young people can join in with the fun.”

To get involved you must be a member of Mahdlo, the recommended age range is 8-14, £3 for either morning (9:30-12:30) or afternoon (1:30-4:30), or £10 for all day including food and drink.

We are previewing activities every day this week. In our third blog of the week, we focus on something wonderful and original. It thoroughly pleases me to introduce something totally unique and artistic for the whole family. Illuminate is an event taking place in the evening that’s definitely going to be an exciting outdoor spectacular.

Illuminate's promotional poster

Oldham Council’s Art Team leads this invigorating activity as they plan light up the night in Illuminate, a festival of fire and water. What you’re expecting to see are giant lanterns, sculptures, waterfalls of fire and a finale performance involving state-of-the-art pyrotechnics. Local schools and community groups have been working alongside the team behind Illuminate to create artwork and staging, even bike powered machines that will shadow screens telling the story of the canal with its roots and origins.

Shonagh Ingram, part of the Illuminate team, has a positive outlook for the event:

“It will end in a stunning finale performance at the Failsworth Canal Basin, with exploding lily pads, a waterfall of fire and a wedding quite unlike anything you have ever seen before! Illuminate was awarded the prestigious 'Inspired by London 2012' Mark, meaning that it is one of only a handful of projects from the North West to be included in the prestigious Cultural Olympiad programme. Illuminate is just one of a series of projects and events funded by the Arts Council and Failsworth District Partnership. This year long programme of activity is called Catalyst; the idea is to get people of all ages and backgrounds involved in the arts, and to celebrate the rich industrial heritage of Oldham, particularly around the canal. Watch out for more Catalyst projects throughout the summer including your opportunity to get involved in Art Bikes and Salvage!" A mystical creature (Source - Mike Green and paBoom)

And this is what Easter means to the Illuminate team:

“Easter means local people can come together to watch us create amazing works of art for the Illuminate event!”

Illuminate takes place Saturday 14th April 7.30pm-9.30pm, Failsworth Canal Basin (Ashton Rd West). Today, we focus on the wide programmed offered by Oldham Community Leisure (OCL).

The new state-of-the-art facility in Chadderton.

OCL are definitely doing their part this Easter by hosting fantastic sessions at their various centres across the borough, even I fancy having a whale of a time during days where they toss out the inflatables!

The programme for activities that are happening in Glodwick, Saddleworth, Oldham Town Centre, Chadderton, Royton and Crompton, is jam-packed with so many days of swimming pool, sports and fitness sessions. They’re catering for all.

Well, what do I recommend doing if there’s just so much to do? I think the inflatables at Splash Sessions would be extremely fun, no question there. But then again, there’s stuff happening that wouldn’t involve screaming and getting wet such as trampoline coaching and teen gym. All of these sessions cost under a fiver to get involved with, there’s absolutely loads of days and times that would suit your flexible needs, plus, plenty of time to do something if you’re busy! Click the link at the bottom of the article to find out more.

Here’s what Danielle Peel, one of the ladies situated at the amazing, brand new Chadderton Wellbeing Centre, had to say about Easter and OCL:

“Easter at OCL is a really exciting time; we have fun activities every day from inflatables to fun swimming sessions, learning to Kayak at Oldham Sports Centre to shooting Basketball hoops at Failsworth Sports Centre. This Easter is all about reaching for the sky and aiming for new heights – whether it’s through bouncing on the trampolines, diving into the pool or indoor climbing at Oldham Sports Centre.”

It’s great to be back for Easter, we’ve got so much in store for young people of Oldham once again. More interesting activities, more time to do things, more sunshine and of course, more chocolate! Easter is a fantastic time of the year. Every day this week we’ll be previewing the best of what’s on over the holidays in Oldham. We’ll be informing you what incredible opportunities lie ahead. I’ll kick things off by telling you all about The Small Cinema’s schedule for half term.

Success over February half term for the Small Cinema

Why do I cover the The Small Cinema project quite often on the Go! Oldham website? Simply because it’s marvellous and they show an array of films that are suitable for all ages, most importantly the whole family. Sophie Barrott and the guys behind the programme have been working hard this year to ensure they continue to deliver the independent cinematic experience.

There’s always a chance to post feedback at the end of a film viewing, they encourage it. Never have I been to support the Small Cinema and noticed that not an ounce of bad feedback is given, it’s all positive responses. I swung by as per usual during February to support them by watching romantic drama, One Day. Afterwards, I spoke to a few attendees who were satisfied and enthralled. Words to describe the experience were, “brilliant” and “a quality service provided".

Hop trailer, looks like a brilliant animation!

The three main films that are worth viewing over the half term period are The Rescuers, Hop and Super 8. Surprisingly, Sophie has not seen Hop herself, so she’s thoroughly looking forward to it as it’s the perfect Easter film! Luckily, she had plenty to say about the classic Disney animation and Abrams’ sci-fi flick:

“The Rescuers always brings back good memories for me of my childhood. We’re proud to showcase it live as it has never been televised before, so it’ll be the first time people have watched it on a big screen. I remember the voices of Bernard and Miss Bianca well! As for Super 8, it was massive surprise for me. The trailer didn’t give too much away, and in the end it was rather gripping and intense. It’s also funny and heart-warming, yet loud, harsh and frightening. Nobody should miss out on this one.”

As a new feature to these Easter previews, I also asked organisers what Easter means to them. Sophie had this to say regarding what Easter means to her:

“Easter to me used to be the time of the year when my mum would whip out the glue gun, yellow fluffy chickens and ribbons for my Easter bonnet for the parade at primary school. Now thankfully, I can just relax with some mini eggs, and pretend like I don’t eat them throughout the year anyway!”

Hop screens Tuesday 3 April 2pm, The Rescuers screens Tuesday 10 April 2pm, and Super 8 screens Thursday 19 April 7pm. Plenty to watch at The Gallery in the space of three weeks! Tickets are £3.00 and you can buy them on the night or reserve in advance on 0161 770 4643 (Advance booking is recommended). Remember, kids get a free goodie bag at all family films!

The Gallery remains a wonderful place to host activities such as arts, crafts, music, cinema and much more. Following the success of a similar event last year, this half term, the Arts Development Service in Oldham presents a whole weekend event packed full of creative sessions for everyone get involved in that offers a different experience from last year.

What’s occurring during the weekend of the 17-19 February is indeed ‘Well Good Arts Weekend’ where young people are invited to participate in a range of activities. Everything that’s on offer is designed to help maintain physical and mental wellbeing; fun times also. It already sounds convincing for you to get your hands stuck in but let me tell you that I was tempted to let my creativity flow in a previous session!

All I can say is that you can discover things about yourself or maybe find something new to be intrigued by. Attending the ‘Well Good Weekend’ is bound to entertain you, and it’s for all ages too. Light graffiti sounds pretty immense, so I think that’s the one to look out for along with the special drama performance.

Victoria Brown, organiser and helper of the weekend, had this to say:

“Arts and creative activity can help you to feel healthier and happier. The Well Good Arts Weekend is a great opportunity to try out new, exciting activities. We hope to inspire participants to take part in regular art sessions throughout the year. On the Saturday we also have an exciting interactive performance called The Sweet Smell of Success.”

Well Good Weekend Schedule

Don’t you just love a decent bike ride in a while? Well, if you miss it too despite the cold weather, then forget about it and get down to Alexandra Park for some peddling!

Activ8Oldham are known for their special outdoor activities and luckily for the people of Oldham, there’s going to be two days of bike-riding during the February half term. The organisation has been funded to make sure that people of Oldham get the best out of an active but fun lifestyle with brilliant organised bike and walking events. I think you should give them a go as you’ll be exploring some beautiful countryside during the journey.

That’s right, qualified cycling instructors will be guiding all attendees through Daisy Nook, Park Bridge, Strinesdale, Leesbrook and Alexandra Park. You’ll be riding through different areas on pathways and cycle trails; exciting stuff.

It gives me great pleasure to announce that there’s no charge to use the bikes and safety gear provided, you’re only recommended to bring a drink to quench your thirst. It’s also advised to wear warm clothing as it’s going to be cold (as I’ve mentioned!), avoid wearing your best clothing as there’s a possibility of rain or getting muddy as you cycle through the countryside. There are no stabilisers so you must know how to ride a bike properly, and any children that are under 16 who wish to turn up without parents need their consent via a letter.

Gaynor Keane is an Activ8Oldham Co-ordinator and she has a great feeling for the activity:

"The Activ8Oldham project really took off last year and had over 1000 people of all ages from across the borough of Oldham taking part in our rides. We've had some great feedback and positive outcomes from people who have kept active and can really feel the difference it's made to them and their families. Not only is Cycling a great way to get more active and learn new skills it’s also a fun way to meet new people and visit the beautiful parks and countryside settings that are right on our doorstep.”

Get your game on at the Olympics Camp at Saddleworth school next week.

An invigorating event that’s bound to get young people fit and active is no other than the Olympics Holiday Camp. The experience will offer sessions such as racquet sports, fencing, football, athletics, rugby league and multi-skill sessions to improve core skills and abilities. There will be taster sessions in the various sports as well as competitions in many of the sports. I personally feel that sports organisers in Oldham offer the best sessions and facilities that they could possibly put on for people; it sounds amazing as it’s dedicated to the 2012 Olympics too!

The guys have lots of rewards in store for the best performances; they will be delivering a range of skill sessions during the activities with competitions in the afternoon with children and young people being placed in gold, silver and bronze positions winning medals throughout the week. It all kicks off will be from Monday 13 February to Friday the 18February at Saddleworth School.

Hello everyone! Each day this week we'll be telling you what the best activities are during the half term and to kick things off I re-introduce you all to the Small Cinema experience.

The independent film projectors in Oldham are run by Sophie Barrott, an art student who already works for the Odeon as well as having a massive interest in the world of cinema. They’ve already catered for everyone and all ages with an array of films at their two venues, The Gallery and Playhouse2. I’m happy to announce that The Small Cinema are showcasing some new films this year and you’ll have your chance to experience the values of cinema differently this half-term and beyond!

February half-term will be hosting ‘One Day’ and ‘Mr. Popper’s Penguins’. In ‘Mr. Popper’s Penguins’ Jim Carey stars as a businessman whose life changes after he inherits six penguins. Clueless to the important things in life Mr Popper’s world is turned upside down with the arrival of his new flightless friends. As he transforms his apartment into a winter wonderland his professional life begins to slide… before discovering that there is more to life than making money. I’ve seen this film myself and it’s definitely one for the family to sit down together and watch, maybe this is something for you?

Sophie told me why the romantic drama of ‘One Day’, starring Jim Sturgess and Anne Hathaway, is so appealing for those who aren’t that interested in the genre as well as it serving as a post-Valentine’s Day hit:

“It’s one of those rare films these days that really got to me. It can be described as a story which is beautifully as it’s heart-wrenchingly sad. It’ll linger with you for days afterwards; it’s not something forgettable or easily ignored. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey as you see them both bring the book’s character’s Dexter and Emma to life. Become immediately entranced in their captivating relationship, and feel for them as two hopelessly blind characters in the classic ‘will they won’t they’ scenario.”

It’s time for young people to shoot some hoops and show off their stripes in action-packed basketball sessions at Saddleworth School.

Jonathan giving a pre-session talk

Every Tuesday evening sees well-organised sessions run by dedicated staff of Oldham’s sports sector, which makes basketball in Saddleworth a worthwhile occasion. Although it’s necessary for me to rate people like Jonathan Harrison, who leads the activity, that’s only the beginning. Never have I witnessed a sporting session which is a collaboration of both genders and all ages together, thus it caters perfectly well for the younger generation in Oldham. The icing on the cake is definitely the £1 entry fee; it’s more than a fair price!

Children enjoying basketball

The sports hall and gymnasium are utilised as many kids come running in, all eager to play basketball. Staff split up the children into age, and if there’s more than a handful of boys and girls for each staff member, then the older lads who train afterwards, lend a helping hand. The relationship between teacher and student is wonderful as the kids are fairly disciplined and immediately respond to instructions without temptation of bouncing the balls as the staff talk.

With maintainable co-operation and control, the kids immediately immerse themselves by playing basketball and have a good time. They all seemed to enjoy keeping active with non-stop energy and determination to improve. Every child is equally put on the spotlight to demonstrate what they’ve learned and to be given a head start in a mini-game or drill. It’s not a sport to be taken lightly, I saw a couple of youngsters who were the alphas of their groups, dominating as their ability surpassed others, especially newcomers. The competitive spirit is always bursting out whenever a team sport is played, but basketball is entertaining and fun to play.

Competitive practice game between the older, professional boys

Jonathan believes that the session can offer numerous opportunities for kids who’re interested in the sport:

“Anybody that hasn’t played before are taken through the simplistic side of basketball with step-by-step routines. The older bunch co-ordinate their own games and get on with it as they’re more experienced. But overall, everybody enjoys the sessions. This community activity will obviously pave way for more opportunities for the more talented players we have here.”

Interview with Jonathan Harrison

From my eyes, I love the venue as it creates plenty of space for a horde of eager children to storm in and get playing basketball.
Read on to learn about the metaphor of the "empty seats"

All That is the name of a magazine which is being specially designed to inform and entertain the young audience of Oldham. It’ll definitely feature an array of articles which will cover many topics including what’s available for young people and round-ups of what’s to come.

The project is run under the Oldham Chronicle and leading it are post-graduate students who aim to turn around this ambitious project in a month’s time. The young men who are running it before a new team take over are Ryan Hill, Peter Bircak and Joe Whitworth. They’re undergoing a placement with Groundwork, an organisation which gives out voluntary opportunities to sustain and replenish the good will of communities through hard work and dedication. This current programme has given the lads a chance to help launch this magazine in February, but they can’t do it alone.

The bulk of the content will be written by us, the young people of Oldham. This is what’ll make it a triumph, the fact that young people can work together to create something fascinating which is accessible and entertaining. They’re still looking for people to come forward and help out. You could write about anything you fancy, for instance you’ll see some stuff from people like myself and the Small Cinema’s Sophie Barrott, which will relate to what we do at the moment. Advertisements for activities and events, upcoming films, games and books, and even pieces centred on sports, culture and fashion are all welcomed.

Young people of Oldham are going to get the biggest treat ever, as the opening day of Mahdlo’s new building is due to open in March 2012. Here’s my Xmas special people; talking about the wonders of Mahdlo and how it benefits our town.

Lucy Kershaw talking to the kids

What is Mahdlo? Well, quite simply, Mahdlo is a £5 million project which will offer some of the most amazing facilities that’ll give youths the opportunity to engage with. There’s been a decline in what the community has to offer its kids, but the people behind Mahdlo have identified the problem and will step up the boundaries tenfold. Things for young people to do shall not be limited anymore and there’s space for everybody to do things. Children of all ages, backgrounds, sexes and races are welcome; it accommodates for everybody! OnSide are an organisation who specialise with youth in the community, they secured funding to build centres for young people in the North West. Oldham is going to evolve with this new centre; everyone is thoroughly looking forward to it.

OnSide’s vision:

“To build, deliver and sustain a network of 21st century youth centres across the North-West giving young people top quality, safe and affordable places to visit in their leisure time.”

The vision will come into perspective next year

Words can’t describe how appreciative everybody is at the moment, and certainly will be more gratitude when the completion of the heavily-invested building passes. The future of young people in Oldham is shaped by this very programme. It’s fortunate for kids to have access to this wonderful building with an array of activities which will be within reach, there’s the possibility of picking up new hobbies as well as making new friends. Plus, a unity will be fortified. Declines in opportunities for young people failing to get up to something fun and creative will surely end when kids from all over the show will most likely swing by the centre.

Messages are cascaded all over the walls for kids

There’re endless things to say about the building and the many facilities, but let me move onto talking about the pre-movement. I went down to the youth centre, just off Union Street. It’s a warm environment where the children have been going over time. There I met some of the kids and Mahdlo team, who were all keen to let me know about what they’re looking forward to the most. Before I get down to the juicy details, I want to give a shout-out to a few people involved with Mahdlo: Rebecca Baron (OnSide’s finest), Laura Windsor-Welsh (Youth Work Manager) , Lucy Kershaw (Youth Worker), Rachelann Brooks (Youth Worker), Helen Taylor (Chief Executive), Ste Hardy (Youth Worker), and Lee Thompson and his band of helpers.

Me and some of the lovely workers

The current youth centre is just across the road from Connexions, and has provided young people with a place to hang out after school and during the holidays. It didn’t take long for me to understand the attitudes and values of everybody in the room. The children turn up as a means to ‘get out of the house’, chat and chill with their friends, let their creative sides loose, and to participate in various activities. It was Christmas card week, so for all the wonderful sponsors and partners who’ve been behind the launch of the new building, were to receive a special message from the kids. When will a time ever occur when I’m not tempted to get my hands stuck in?

The glitter glue is out again

From the kid’s perspectives, it seems that the facilities that they’re looking forward to the most involve fitness. The boys are primarily looking forward to the gymnasium and boxing classes, whilst the girls are intrigued by the prospect of dance. It amazes me to an extent as there’s a desire for fitness-related activities, maybe it’ll create an incentive for the youth of Oldham to engage in calorie-burning sessions!

All these references of ‘time’ signify the symbolism of time. The people at Mahdlo revolve around the notion of a countdown, so as each day draws nearer, the enticement blooms. When I spoke to one of their helpers, Lee Thompson, whose time with Mahdlo has seen him become the Chairman of the Young Peoples Development Group. I found out more about why the countdown was important:

“As each day passes, it’s an incentive for us to feel excited to move to the new centre”, he said, “It’s going to be huge.”

I spoke to everyone there on the night including some of the youth workers, but I recorded an amazing interview with Laura Windsor-Welsh, who’s one of the finest youth workers I’ve encountered. I’d love to share it with you but there’s a technical glitch at the moment which is unfixable, I’m sure it’ll feature in the next Mahdlo piece as Laura explains the importance of “pride” in Oldham. Laura had this to say:

"There are fantastic offers that Mahdlo will give to young people. Phenomenal facilities that young people deserve and will enjoy, this investment shows that Oldham cares about the youth generation. The facilities will be accessible and will give tonnes of new experiences whether friendships are formed between the kids or between kids and youth workers, doing new things that young people never thought of doing, and so much more. The ethos of Mahdlo is that young people drive the project and it’s brilliant.”

Never forget that youth workers are there for support

Lucy invited me over to come and have a tour of the work-in-progress Mahdlo building, so I met the gang outside Bluecoat School a few days later. Despite the terrible weather conditions, it was enticing to get an exclusive preview of the interior. Armed with helmets and steel toe-capped wellies, a few of us were guided into the main entrance. Accompanying us was Mahdlo’s director, Susan Boyle, who gave us a rundown of what certain areas inside would look like. It was nice to use our imaginations and visualise all the greatness to come. The climbing wall was the pinnacle; surrounded by construction it looked awesome.

Colourful and charasmatic

It looks rather small from the outside, but I was taken up various flights of stairs and guided towards many rooms that include media suites, offices, dance and gym studios, and much more. The place is massive. It was time to get out the Christmas cards we made earlier, they spelt out the message, “Merry Crimbo from Mahdlo”, and so we all got in a line with our funky Santa Claus hats on. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day because not only did I get to predict the goodness that’s slowly approaching, but it gives me great pleasure to see the project unfold before my eyes.

                                     Interview with Lee Thompson

I applaud Mahdlo’s competent, charming and wonderful staff for remaining patient and getting the children’s spirits up for the big opening day. The almighty team of cool, professional youth workers have maintained strength and optimism as they look forward to the giant movement to the £5 million centre as well as the kids. A positive thing worth mentioning is that there’s a sense of loyalty within the community. Different children from different background have tried to attend as many sessions as possible despite lacking state-of-the-art facilities for different reasons, and it’s paid off. They’ll be rewarded with the immense centre with dozens of recreational activities to choose from; I guess all young people from Oldham have the opportunity to have fun!

                                           From the highest floor

The highly anticipated centre is opening March 19 2012 and it’ll be epic.
Hello everybody, my name is Jorel James Bond and I'm going to be working closely with Go! Oldham over the next few months. My aim is to generate content and blog for the website efficiently. I plan to do this by improving the outlook of the programme and to give life to the online platforms that are already available in Go! Oldham's name.

Me filming Oldham Athletic U-11 Football Training, November 2010.

Me and Digital Journalism

I'm a Mancunian lad who was born in 1990 and grew up with a keen interest for Manchester United, video games and East Asian culture. My nostalgic childhood has enabled me to enjoy the pleasures in life and I've attained more hobbies. Nowadays I love to attend the cinema on a weekly basis, play and watch football, play video games, write creatively, watch anime, get involved with recreational sports, walk and keep active, seeing friends and many more.

Absolute gaming nutcase when I was a whippersnapper

I'm currently undergoing my final year as a Digital Journalist. I got where I am with English language/literature as my forte with a keen understanding for aspects of film. During my first two years on the course, I went out on various film shoots as my tutor encouraged me to get as much beneficial experience as possible. I picked up various skills during my journalistic adventures and have had some great memories with my journalistic friends.

I've co-operated with a range of clients, small businesses and organisations during the course. Before, during and after the process of each practical project, both parties found sucess and it's been an immense experience overall. From Manchester Business School to the Salvation Army, from Oldham Coliseum to Oldham Says, from Reason Digital to the Oldham Chronicle, and much more. Now I find myself working with Oldham once again, but in particular the youth sector, something fresh and awesome for me to form a project out of.

What can I do for Go! Oldham, why and how?

As a professional I see myself as a filmmaker, innovative leader and ideas presenter. With these three key skills that I have in particular along with my ability to write, I think I can give the website the appeal it deserves.

The plans that I have in mind are to attend some of these activities and engage with them. I'll be doing filming, photography, podcasts and writing reflectively afterwards, wherever I go. Some of you will be fortunate if you catch me around, as I'll be investigating the fun elements of the activity that you're currently getting involved with.

A feature video I made about a primary school's film club, March 2010.

What Go! Oldham has to offer already is fantastic, I was perplexed but impressed by the endless list of different activities that the website advertises. It's really nice to see that the people working behind the programme want the best for young people in the community. I admire all the passion and effort put into Go! Oldham from the beginning up until now, where we will improve.

My own reasoning for wanting to pursue this project is not only because I have the ability and right frame of mind, but I also like the messages of the programme that are embedded within. I know parents who wonder if there's anything remotely interesting for their children to do, and young people alike who are unsure what's on offer locally. It's not just about not knowing what's to do, but trying to pick up a recreational hobby as well as juggling other commitments too.

Christmas Pantomime at the Coliseum, December 2009.

My sister is a great example, she thinks her social life is "boring" because "there's nothing to do". I'll strongly advise my sibling that she's wrong as Go! Oldham cascade a vast number of activities that happen within a feasible distance. Hopefully, I won't have to convince her anymore and she'll eventually pick up a new hobby that she can engage with and look forward to.

I aim to help adults and young people in the community with my input on the website, so you can understand how cool some of the events are! There are opportunities to make new friends and gain extra skills as you immerse yourself in activities. I too, forged a strong friendship through my favourite hobby, cinema-going, proof that it can work with others as well.

Future Prospects

With the power of social media at our disposal, we hope to see a change within the community. The transition will make such an impact on the site and of course, yourselves. With the traditional method of 'word of mouth', you can join the discussions and leave feedback on the blog and/or in other places such as our Facebook page, Twitter account and YouTube channel.

The force is strong with me.

With more online focus, the activity and traffic will gradually increase over time. Just tell us what you think about the programme and get talking to us; every comment is valid and worthwhile. Go! Oldham can only get better and services will improve when social engagement takes place, we thorougly encourage co-operation and feedback.

We're still in planning stages but top ideas have been brainstormed which will all come into perspective some time, watch this space and keep tabs on us. I hope that you enjoy the media that I'll be providing via the website and other platforms in the long run.

Follow me on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Welcome to World of Warpath! I'll be doing blog posts about what occurs in my lifestyle in order to give you an insight to what I love to get up. This week I've decided to write about my action-packed weekend in London. I got my game on playing my favourite game, Gears of War 3, with the competitive community that I devote spare time to.

                                            Yours truly at EGL 4

The upcoming gaming event brand, European Gaming League, has provided gamers with a hunger to take it to the next level with cash prize tournaments. EGL was established in 2009 and ran a prototype event at a small venue in order to see if they had what it took to maintain an organisation as such. Console gaming was at an all-time high before EGL was in the works as another company hosted gaming events in UK under the name of Matchbox XL, however this only happened from 2006-08 before mysteriously disbanding. It was thanks to people such as Chris ‘Mellow’ Marsh who’s currently one of the head administrators of EGL that fun-filled and competitive console gaming exists, not only as a community but an opportunity for newcomers as well. Chris managed to learn from the beta event which took place in HMV Gamerbase Manchester, and thus the magnitude increased. There was More publicity, more advertisement, more action, more gaming and most importantly, more gamers.

The first EGL event 2009, who can you see in the video?

At this current stage, EGL event #5 is being organised for April 2012. I’ve followed the event at places such as Blackpool and Liverpool in the last year, but recently I went south to London as EGL 4 was hosted at the Emirates Stadium. It’s unbelievable that I witnessed a gaming event happen at an elite landmark that I’ve always wanted to see. I love Thierry Henry as well by the way. The other venues were good such as Liverpool’s BT Convention Center and Blackpool’s Norbreck Castle, but they aren’t acknowledged like Arsenal’s football ground, it’s well-known.

The Emirates Stadium looking stunning

I was mesmerised at the cleanliness of the place was, that was a huge factor as well as how posh the inside was too. Aesthetics matter at proper events that have been planned out well, any event in general. There were so many new gamers who were all opting to play reoccurring titles Call of Duty, Halo, Gears of War (my game!), FIFA, Street Fighter and now Starcraft II which isn’t a console game. PC gaming is ridiculously huge worldwide, so to incorporate an event which caters for both console and PC gamers, then competitive gaming organisations such as EGL, will prosper.

An epic Call of Duty match between Imperial & infused

During events, people get the chance to play on their game of choice as well as to spectate and have a browse around the various sponsor stands. It’s like an exhibition, you look around and see what gets you interested the most, and you can have a taste for everything available. People network with one another as newcomers are the new face of the game and have a desire to get known with a reputation, others have created long-term friendships and look forward to seeing their pals at the event. But when it all gets competitive, that’s when you see the transition.

Even French teams like Rdamage have a point to prove

Gamers don’t attend these sorts of events just to have a laugh, everyone has a winning mentality. Players go totally in the zone and the atmosphere becomes competitive. With people aiming for a top placement, proving themselves or making a stand, each game becomes highly entertaining to follow. I’ll admit, I didn’t come prepared for EGL4 due to not sorting myself a proper team out for Gears of War 3, but I wasn’t expecting to go back empty handed. I still played my heart out and tried but it’s a new game and I lacked the experience to play naturally. The event has previously hosted Gears of War 1 as it’s an amazing game despite being ancient now. I’ll be back next time with a bang for sure.

Mainstage, I'll be playing on you one day!

Let’s talk about the negative aspect of most EGL events. The food is not recommended at events because it’s expensive, but thank god for McDonald’s! Other than that, there aren’t any real problems. It’s more expensive down south which is expected. It’s only fair that southerners get an opportunity to attend an event near to home for once as the majority of these conventions run either up north or in the middle of the country. If you’re not an organised person, then sort out your priorities! I was only kidding, but I’m being serious now, the event becomes pricey if you fail to book accommodation and sort out travel earlier on. There’ve been instances where people fail to attend due to hotel rates rocketing sky-high; don’t risk it after telling you this.

Warpath getting his game on

Best ‘til last policy kicking in now, here’s what Chris had to say when I asked him how EGL’s service provides not only an entertaining experience but also a sustainable event for gamers to support and rely on. Wise words here people:

“At EGL we constantly strive to improve ourselves, the quality of our service and the quality of our competitions. We work hard to learn what it is the community want to see from us and we put in the time and effort to get to know as many people as want to know us. I think the extremely close relationship with the communities that we serve enable us to provide the best event possible. There are always mistakes made and we aim to learn from these mistakes. EGL5 will hopefully be even better and that is our next focus. Attending an EGL event is not just turning up and playing a few games, it's the experience, the bonding with other gamers and the heat of competition. Sure, you may lose all your games but hopefully you'll come back next time even stronger. The European Gaming League provides the most competitive console competitions outside of North America and that is what you get when you attend our events.”

Catching Chris at the wrong time

If you’re interested in finding out more about the gaming community that’s immense accessible, head over to www.decerto.net to find out more information about the game that you fancy taking up at the next event. I’ll be writing about my favourite hobby of all time in part 2 of World of Warpath. Goodbye for now!

Make Noise in Oldham with Band School

If there’s ever a need to make music through a set of creative exercises, then Band School’s the place to be.

Simon and one of his students

Musical-based activities would cease to exist in Oldham town centre if it wasn’t for Sam Malik, the owner of multimedia company, Square1. The initiative is to apply the organisation’s specialities which are the provision of audio and video services to make Band School happen. Sam’s an awesome guy who I’ve briefly worked with before during a networking night in 2010, where I filmed a short interview with him. The programme runs on a weekly basis at Square1’s headquarters, just around the corner from Sainsbury’s.

The simplistic set-up that's used

Sessions are run by the company’s Head of Live Music, Simon Bennett, who’s the backbone of Band School’s values, trying to make music tuition accessible and fun. A basis was established in the beginning in order to get young people into music, as Simon believes that anybody can become talented musicians if they gradually have a passion for music. Alongside Simon is his sister, Liz, who supports the sessions with her enthusiasm and sentiment for music. Together, they’re a formidable duo; perhaps this is because they come from a musically-orientated family.

I stood back and watched the siblings do their thing, only to be impressed of course. Simon stood out as an inspirational figure as he educated the children and got them to comprehend with his technique. There was a mellow environment, everyone seemed content and only had a drive to make music; even when time’s always a restraint. The plan of the evening was to resume practice from the previous week where Simon was getting the “band” to progress with the jazz sets that they’ve been working with.

Effective teaching methods

There’s never any doubt amongst the group, even when Simon instructs the children to do badly and fail in attempts to make an impact, it’s all part of the development process. Even Simon himself said that Band School is all about failing in order to succeed, so practice makes perfect. I saw that the teaching methods proved worthy, as there was discipline and a yearning to do more. The group continuously played the same set over and over again until they nailed it completely, which didn’t take long by the way!

Interviewing Simon as he plays the piano

That night, more young people were expected, but the low numbers did not fool me at all. I was unfazed because the session featured two girls who are regular attendees along with a new kid on the block, just as keen and willing as the other two. I guess this was a good thing for the new boy as he needed to settle, being overwhelmed with more people to deal with is not ideal during ice-breaking. But that didn’t matter; he came out of his shell and gave it his all. Solid proof that any decent recreational activities are always prepared to give newcomers a friendly experience.

Square1

“We brainstormed all possibilities to see whether we could come up with something that involved free music intuition, so it started off as a basic club for kids to come along and form a band,” Simon explained. “I want to try and show people the nice and creative side of music. If the kids progress then they can take it a step further, in fact, they could possibly go anywhere with their new skills.”

Simon Bennett on Band School (mp3)

All I have for Band School is praise. They work hard to bring out the creativity and vibe in young people; it’s admirable. Not only are children and teenagers taught about versatility with different instruments, but personal qualities such as confidence, co-operation, outgoingness and determination, come to light. I’d recommend this activity to young people who are keen to be musically educated who are up for the practicalities that are on offer.

Get in touch with Sam Malik if you’re interested, plus Square1 have other activities available such as Urban Tek; same principles but different sort of music making.

The attractive banner

Starting over a year ago, a group of young people with a yearning for the world of cinema brainstormed about how they could bring films to light in Oldham. Why did they do this? Simply because there isn’t a multiplex in the town centre, thus the nearest cinemas remain in Rochdale, Ashton and Manchester. The good news was that the pitch was successful and as a result they won an arts council grant to establish The Small Cinema programme.

Leading lady, Sophie Barrott, who’s a film enthusiast and currently works at the Odeon as a projectionist, found inspiration to initiate the programme. It was all the months of hard work last year that has lead Sophie to give people the opportunity to enjoy aspects of film locally. The sessions have been running at two particular venues, The Gallery and Playhouse 2. The significant aspect of the project is that it caters for all ages. Children’s films are shown with arts and crafts sessions occurring a few hours beforehand, but parents take their children so they can enjoy the hobby together. Also, a range of genres with different age certifications are shown during the evening as the current venues in use are alternated.

On the day of the session, Dreamwork’s Rio, was not only the film being shown but it created a theme. The film is about parrots so there were sheets to colour in, badges to make and bird masks to be refined with feathers and other bits and bobs to glue on. I found myself immersed when I attended the session. I only expected to get the general scoop and information required to write this, but I was totally in the zone. I was keen to participate in helping to run the arts and craft session alongside making a bird mask myself. Using glitter glue was nostalgic and I was in bliss.

I was speaking to other parents as they happily watched their children thoroughly enjoy themselves. Mother of two, Sarwat Siddiq, was impressed by the arts and crafts display. “It draws the children in and keeps them busy as they become creatively engaged. There are books in the library which is an important event," she said strongly. “The more creative the sessions, the better the appeal is. If there’s a balance of education and creativity then the children won’t get bored. More physical participation keeps them satisfied.”

Sarwat's daughters cracking a cheeky smile

The involvement through arts and craft with parent and child

The arts and craft session intrigued the attendees; some of them didn’t know that there was a film being shown afterwards. It was quiet at first which was expected, but families came pouring in with their excited children, all prepared for doing something creative before watching Rio. Something magical about the experience was jaw-dropping, that was indeed the atmosphere.

Temporary badge for me

My mission is to help The Small Project gain some recognition but obviously that isn’t the case. The event was sold out and even though they were fully booked, the high demand only meant that exceptions were made for other families, who wouldn’t get in if it was a proper cinema. I literally only knew about how the programme can appeal to others and why it’s beneficial for families, but nothing about what happens during the events. It was massive surprise to see just how successful it was. Just looking at the huge queue before Mark was offering to shove in a few more chairs in the screening room despite selling every last ticket was brilliant.

Mark Swanwick, a co-ordinator for The Small Cinema, has been assisting Sophie on various occassions from start to finish. “The aim of the project is to entertain and to give youngsters the opportunity to see films as there’s no cinema in Oldham. If the kids get an education out of our sessions then it’s definitely a bonus.” Mark also added, "It's crucial that we deliver the experience to those who are interested in seeing films in Oldham."

The reasoning and origin behind the project through Sophie’s perspective made me connect with her and the programme itself. We were both students at Oldham Sixth Form College and had the same film studies teacher, obviously share a passion for worldwide cinema and are both keen to help out in the community.

Sophie Barrott on The Small Cinema (mp3)

I think that what Sophie does is fantastic. Although cinema-going and film appreciation are in my top five hobbies of all-time, I think she’s better suited to this as her life revolves around cinema! Everything has paid off, her dedication and efforts have paved a future career path where she’ll end up doing something involving cinema-based.

I’d highly recommend anybody to attend an upcoming film, not only to enjoy the experience but to also support The Small Cinema. It’s a programme that has been conceptuliased which now offers an interesting and entertaining experience; cheap tickets too. The best thing is that they’ve got bags of potential to improve and remain consistent; crucial for ambitious projects like this. They’re yet to show Hayao Miyazaki aka the Japanese Walt Disney, imagine getting together with your family and friends to watch it in Oldham, wow.

Jorel and Sophie approve

15 year old Callum from Royton was one of fifteen young people to take part in the Oldham Way Challenge this summer. Here, Callum tells Go! Oldham all about the experience...

The Oldham Way is a 40 mile hike around Oldham that we completed over two days! My group from the Oldham Youth Council, were one of several groups from Sholver, Fittonhill, Limehurst and Hollinwood to set off together on the challenge. We got to stay overnight at the great Castleshaw Centre and I can tell you after the first day of walking 20 miles, when I saw the centre, my face lit up as I knew I could finally rest.

In the evening, we had a lovely meal made by the lovely youth workers – it was so tasty I had seconds! After a rest with my fellow walkers and a few games of cards we went to bed for a well-earned sleep. In the morning we boarded the minibus for our second day of walking. The day began with a difficult climb up the steps of Dunwood Park– my heart skipped a beat when I saw how many I had to climb but we all made the effort and we got to the top. My experience was amazing and I really enjoyed everyone’s company. The hike was incredibly difficult but we all managed to do it. I really enjoyed completing the Oldham Way challenge – I would definitely do it again as it was great fun. Plus, we were raising money for a good cause – the Mayors Appeal.

If you are interested in taking part in challenges like The Oldham Way, contact Jodie Barber, on jodie.barber@oldham.gov.uk. For more outdoor activities on in Oldham, search ‘outdoor’ via the search facility on the site.

The Small Cinema project presents four great films for you to see in August. Films will be shown at Gallery Oldham on 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd August. Here, Sophie Barrott, the person behind the project, tells us why she's a fan of the four films being shown.

The first film we’re showing in August, Tangled, is I believe, a Disney like no other as of late. It goes back to the old classic roots of princess tales and rivals even Snow White and Cinderella! It’s funny, cute and charming. It’s a family film that everyone can fall in love with.

The Jungle Book, one of Disney's ultimate classics, it has great characters, a wonderful story and terrific animation. It’s a film any generation can and will appreciate! I used to watch this film countlessly as a kid, and even now i can still remember the Bear necessities!

Rango is a delightfully different and funny film about a lizard (Voiced by Johnny Depp) who longs for a career in acting and a life outside of his lonely environment. Visually stunning and very entertaining, Rango can please any audience!

Finally, we’re showing Bedknobs and Broomsticks, a true classic, to end the summer’s film season. It’s a film that anyone can appreciate for its timeless story, magic and humour. A true masterpiece of its generation, Bed knobs and broomsticks is a film everyone needs to see!

For more information including booking details about the first film Tangled, go to http://tinyurl.com/3vff3fj

The Musical” cast have set foot in the Oldham Coliseum Theatre and boy is the atmosphere buzzing! Every person I have had a conversation with couldn’t help but express how excited they are for the week ahead, but firstly, today’s agenda was Tech Rehearsal. This is where we jump from cue to cue for the Technical side of the show, music, lights, etc. If people weren’t needed for a long time now was the chance to do last minute line checks and making sure they got every step of the choreography right, as every little detail can be made much better with practice, the phrase ‘practice makes perfect’ works well here.

The cast made themselves at home very quickly as we all chose our dressing rooms; this is probably best as the theatre will practically be that for the next 5 days. After “moving in” to our dressing rooms, we had a talk from our director James Atherton and there is one particular point he said that has stuck in my head, he talked about the tennis player Nadal and that an interviewer asked him how it felt when he was on the court and the sun was on him, he said, “It just makes my game better” and so he asked him what happens when it rains, he said, “It just makes my game better.” This made us all smile we knew what it meant, no matter how good or bad the Tech Rehearsal goes it can “Just make our show better!”

Don’t miss PROM! The Musical at the Oldham Coliseum on Thursday 28th, Friday 29th and Saturday 30th July.
Book today! http://www.gooldham.com/activities.php?page=info&id=3548

PROM! The Musical opens on Thursday for a three night run at Oldham Coliseum. The Oldham Theatre Workshop production promises to be a delight as it follows the class of 2011 for a night to remember. 18 year old Chris Mundy from Royton is one of the actors in the production. Here he tells Go! Oldham what the cast has been up to in the final week of rehearsals before the opening night.

The final weekend of rehearsal before our new piece of musical theatre ‘PROM! The Musical’ is set loose on the general public on Thursday evening has just come to an end! Two days of solid rehearsal in the studio have really taken it out of all the cast, but intense rehearsal like this is just what a good show needs and what makes Oldham Theatre Workshop’s productions such high quality.

Saturday we were at the studio bright and early at 10, ready to perfect what we already had and even change a few things to make it better! This is the beauty of creating a piece from scratch, it’s not set in stone; you can be changing and improving things right up until the last moment to make sure you’re giving your audience the best show you can! By the end of our run on Saturday evening, watched by the Oldham Coliseum’s technical team, we were feeling very positive. But something everyone at Theatre Workshop knows is that feeling positive is never enough and that there is always room for improvement in whatever you do.

Sunday morning we were set free in Alexandra Park for a day of sporting activities to celebrate the one year countdown to the London Olympics. Even though there were many activities happening we only took part in a 1.5k ‘Run 4 Fun’ in various fancy dress items, ranging from the 5-a-day Fruits to a Superman-Pirate-Harry Potter hybrid. We thoroughly enjoyed the run, gave out lots of leaflets and wore our medals proudly for the rest of the day, refusing to take them off.

We didn’t have long to rest though as we were back in the studio for 12, ready to carry on rehearsals! Again we worked to perfect and improve and by 2 we were ready for another run (not the sporting kind, the theatre kind!). All the notes we had been given had been taken into account and we saw the performance improve yet again! You can always base the quality of a piece on its ability to still make even the people who have been working on it for 3 months laugh and ‘PROM!’ manages to do just that, keeping us in stiches throughout. After that we settled down and got to work on the cast recording, which although involved lots of being quiet will be worth it in the end!

Tomorrow brings yet more excitement for us all as we are going to be rehearsing for the first time ever in the space we will be performing…and practically living in for the next 6 days. I can’t wait!

Don’t miss PROM! The Musical at the Oldham Coliseum on Thursday 28th, Friday 29th and Saturday 30th July. Book today! http://www.gooldham.com/activities.php?page=info&id=3548

Oldham Unite on Saturday, you can step into the shoes of your favourite popstar! In our fourth 'Unite' blog of the week, Ian tells us all about it...

I’m Ian from 'Danceheads'. We provide a new and exciting entertainment for all ages. Using 'green screen' technology as seen on TV, up to three participants can choose a pre-recorded pop song to perform to, all by original artists. They sit down in front of the 'green screen', wearing a green gown, so only their head is visible, and we super-impose their heads using a video camera onto the dancer's body. The recordings are then copied onto DVD's for the participants to take home and enjoy with friends and family. The public can watch the recordings being made on two TV monitors. It is great fun and the enjoyed by all ages.

We’re looking forward to Saturday and lots of people having fun especially with Danceheads. I hope that the queues are as long as in previous years. Last year the weather was great and we had crowds of people around the event all day. is my third year at the event and I look forward to it as much as the public. Let's hope for another great day!!

Don't miss Danceheads at the Go! Oldham Unite festival this Saturday at Alexandra Park, 11am - 4pm.

Go! Oldham catches up with Sophie Barrott, the brain behind The Small Cinema Project. Here Sophie tells us why she’s so passionate about film, which films have inspired her and what motivated her to set up The Small Cinema project in Oldham…

I have always been intrigued by films, and how they’re so limitless, and undeniably powerful.

The cinema, for me, was always the most exciting place, where anything was possible. When I was young, for a few hours, I travelled to the most exotic places, met so many new people and make it back in time for tea. This was the beginning of something in me, which I hadn’t yet realised.

The time when I knew I actually wanted to pursue a career in film came when I first started watching films like Donnie Darko, American Beauty and Virgin Suicides. I became obsessed by those rare films that lingered in my mind for days, even years after.

I was inspired for the first time in a long time, and I wanted to share this discovery with everyone. This was the root of my drive for creating The Small Cinema Project in Oldham. Oldham needed a cinema, but most of all it needed something different. This is what I’ve always hoped to provide: a place that shows the best, memorable, and most loved films. We make it affordable, homely, and an experience. Every event is different and every film we’re passionate about. That’s what makes the difference.

Emotionally powerful, shocking, beautiful, interesting, inspiring, funny, heart-warming and confusing films are my favourites. I love everything from Buffalo’66 to the Hangover. I have and always will have a profound love for cinema, and I only wish I inspire others to enjoy the same!

Don’t miss screenings of Black Swan and Toy Story 3 taking place at Gallery Oldham this Thursday 2nd June as part of The Small Cinema project. Fusion is simply one of those things that has to be experienced to be properly understood.

Last year, I was lucky enough to be selected to attend the project, and at that time I had never heard of it, and therefore I knew very little about it. Fusion is about developing cohesion – it enables us to make friends with people from across different areas and cultural background and through this experience we are able to be positive role models to other young people.

I was of course, and I presume many of this years participants are, very anxious due to the fact that I didn't know many people who where going. However, after five days I had come into contact with everyone on the trip, I had had fun, I had made many new friends, and I knew through talking with the Peer Mentors (young people who support us on the project) that I could, and most definitely would apply to be a peer mentor for Fusion 2011.

I did succeed in my application, and in the build up to the trip I have attended sessions aimed at developing the strategies and skills we will employ to make the trip enjoyable for the Fusioneers. So we are looking forward to a fun packed, action packed and enriching week with the youth workers and 49 new friends. I'll let you know how much the experience differed as a Peer Mentor, rather than a Fusioneer once I've recovered from our trip to Wales.

If you'd like to get involved in the Fusion Project, contact Jodie Barber at jodie.barber@oldham.gov.uk.

At the event, young people involved in the project will cook a three course meal for members of the local community. There will be live music, bingo and workshops to look at the way the barriers can be broke down between young people and older people of different generations.

If you’d like to get involved with the project, please contact Stephen Donnelly at stephen.donnelly@oldham.gov.uk.

National Bookstart Week is around the corner. From Monday 6th to Sunday 12th June, over 5,000 fantastic, free family events will be held up and down the country celebrating books, rhymes and sharing stories.

As part of this national festival, Oldham Libraries invite you to get on board the big red bus at Copster Park on 9th June, 9:30am-12noon in a fun-packed morning for the under 5s.

In the run up to the event, we ask mum of three Katie from Lees in Oldham, to tell us about her favourite children’s book and why she she likes reading with her children...

I have three girls and I have read 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' by Eric Carle with all of them. It's such a lovely interactive book, that baby’s and little ones can touch and explore while they listen to the story. Children can recognise the food that the caterpillar eats and me and my girls always talk about what food we like to eat as well!

I think it is an easy book for children to join in with and they soon learn the order of the food that the caterpillar eats. I love this book because the caterpillar starts as a tiny egg and grows into a beautiful butterfly and my girls always love to see him transform at the end.

I always read a bedtime story to my girls, it’s very enjoyable and a nice way to spend quality time together and have lots of cuddles. It is a good routine to have and calms them down at bedtime. My youngest is just learning to read at the moment and she already loves books and enjoys looking at the pictures before bed.

To find out more about National Bookstart week go to www.bookstart.org.uk/events/national-bookstart-week/

The artwork is by members of the Chadderton Youth Forum and graffiti artist Russ who ran a workshop with the Forum. Focusing on improving where you live, the participants of the project looked back at Chadderton’s history and its achievements. Participants then used the findings to inspire the artwork. Themes included Chadderton manufacturing the Lancaster Bomber and using local canals for trade.

The band Envy who perform tonight at Battle of the Bands tell Go! Oldham more about what inspires them and what they have achieved through music.

"We’ve been together for four years and have been doing music ever since. We promote anti racism, anti gun and knife crime through our lyrics, as we believe today’s society tend to listen to messages through music rather than being told by the media. We specialise in Rap music and Grime, which is similar to Rap music and is popular amongst today’s society. We’ve achieved many things since we started on this journey of music and hope to achieve more in the near future.

We have been in the local papers several times. Achieved a music video, which is soon to appear on various music channels. We have another video in the pipeline. We have an album each internationally. We have performed at Gallery Oldham, Oldham and Manchester carnivals and melas. We have performed at YPXL at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. We are currently attending youth centres to help the youth, and will soon be attending schools. We are in talks with radio stations and have been interviewed by Manchester Underground Rap Tv. We also have a youtube account online with footage uploaded. Our music carries a positive message and we intend on repeatedly sharing this with the public."

You can see Envy perform tonight with other local bands at Oldham Library as part the Battle of the Bands gig. Doors open 8pm. Free event. Tickets available on the door.

DJ and Inspiral Carpets legend Clint Boon tells Go! Oldham why he supports the Battle of the Bands gig at Oldham Library.

"I’m really excited at the idea of using the country’s libraries for purposes other than storing, lending and reading books. It’s been heart-warming in recent years to see the amount of libraries around the UK that have been holding live music events within their walls….yes…GIGS!!... who would ever have dreamed of it?!

I’m from the generation who grew up scared of breathing too loudly in the local library. The word ‘Library’ never equalled ‘Fun’

We should indeed celebrate our libraries. They are at the very heart of our culture. Everything about our life, our world, our nature is in there somewhere. So let’s have a party. Let’s have a gig. Let’s sleep over. Let’s talk really, really loud!

Oldham Library is an absolutely wonderful building - in its architecture and its spirit.

The work they’re doing there is priceless and groundbreaking.

I wish them every success with their Battle of the Bands event on the Saturday 19th March.

Last Saturday, a group of young people from Oldham Youth Council carried out a litter pick on Oldham edge. Yasmin Jolly tells us all about it for the Go! Oldham blog.

On Saturday 5th March, a group of the Youth Council Members, including myself, became actively involved in making a change in our community. It was a fantastic opportunity for us to show just how helpful, caring and involved that we young people of Oldham are. Oldham Edge was dazzling once we were done with it!

Our task started at 10am. Eleven of us set out with wellies on our feet, gloves for protection and out handy litter pickers, all prepared for the mission ahead. We found all sorts of rubbish from bags and bottles to electronic devices scattered around the edge of the field and by the noon we had filled the back of a truck with bags of garbage!

However small, we made a difference that day; not just to the visual appearance of a popular field in Oldham but also to the people of Oldham who didn’t know just how fantastic we are (thanks to Big Al from Revolution Radio who interviewed us). If you want to help make a difference, visit www.OYWEB.info or speak to your youth workers and don’t miss out on these great opportunities. Make a difference today.
Did you know that Oldham Yu-Gi-Oh Club has been running in Oldham Library for five years? We meet up every Saturday and Sunday and you can play, trade and collect with other duellists in the club. You don't have to be an expert to join, so come along if you are just starting out with your card collection, want to find out a bit more about Yu-Gi-Oh or if you are a duelling champion!

At Oldham Yu-Gi-Oh we have tournaments around the year for players of all ages and all skills who can have the chance to compete for prizes and trophies. The tournaments are held in the Performance Space in the library, so look out for the dates on Go Oldham!

Our weekend Yu-Gi-Oh club is on from 11am until 3pm in the Children's library. If you are between eight and 18 bring your cards and meet new duellists and make teams with them around specific themes in the game.

In the run up to Battle of the Bands on Saturday 19th March at Oldham Library, we ask the question who’s your favourite band?

Lily, 19, who lives in Chadderton said: A band I really enjoy listening to and seeing perform live is The Fayre. They are a local band which makes them even more interesting and enjoyable to watch knowing band members through school and friends they have a huge following. I’ve seen them headlining my local festival Mozfest and play lots of nearby venues in Oldham and Manchester. They always give a exciting live performance. There mix of of Ska/funk music sets them apart from other up and coming bands and gives them a definite edge in playing packed out gigs. They recently supported Daisy Dares You at Oldham Library which me and my friends went to, was a really fun night.

Sophie, 18, who lives in Lees, said: The Vaccines are a new up and coming band I really enjoy. I recently saw them at the NME tour and they were by far the best band there, it was a really amazing gig. I listen to them all the time on Spotify and there song recently appeared in Teen TV Series skins which has boosted there popularity. They play lots of small venues round the country, including venues near to me such as the Ritz in Manchester. They are also similar to a new Manchester band called The Hurts who have also been playing around local Venues such as The Ritz and Manchester Academy they are a very edgy new band and have recently gained lots critical acclaim from The NME. I would definitely love to go and see these two bands live again!

Liam, 17, who lives in Oldham: One of the best local bands I have seen live are Twisted Wheel, so much in fact that I have seen them four times. They never fail to create an energetic atmosphere and always get the crowd going! I have seen them in local small venues in Manchester and Leeds and in front of a packed crowd at Heaton Park when they supported Oasis. The people of Oldham can relate to the songs as they sing about local people and local places, which i think is why they are so popular amongst the young music crowd in the local area. Definitely a band that must be seen live. Cool as milk.

Don’t miss a great night out of local music with Battle of the Bands on Saturday 19th March, 8pm. Contact Kate Smyth to enter your band kate.smyth@oldham.gov.uk. Collect gig tickets from Oldham Library – don’t miss out, collect yours today.

Cycling is a great way to get active and keep fit and on a nice day there’s no better way to enjoy the outdoors than on yer bike! So with spring now in sight and the light nights – yea! - there couldn’t be a better time for an exciting new cycling centre to be launched in Oldham.

Wheels for All is a scheme for everyone to enjoy in Alexander Park. Part of the Aiming High Short Breaks programme, this new centre includes more than 30 adapted cycles to use ranging from mountain bikes and trikes to those adapted for wheelchair users.

Once on your bike you’ll have the freedom to explore around the park at your own pace. The centre also has links to cycle path networks, which means you can access other areas of the borough and go further afield.
All the cycles are really easy to use, plus, qualified instructors will be on hand to provide full instruction if you need some help getting started.

To find out more and to have a try on the cycles, go along to the Wheels for All launch on Thursday 24 February, 10am -2pm. It will all be happening near the Kings Road car park entrance at Alexandra Park.

The Mayor of Oldham will be officially launching the centre and other special guests are expected on the day, including Oldham Athletics’ mascot Chaddy the Owl.

Julie Hawkins from Aiming High spoke to Go! Oldham about the scheme, she said, “What’s great about this scheme is how inclusive it is. The range of cycles includes those adapted for young people and adults with disabilities, this means there’s a cycle for everyone to use. Aiming High is really exciting about this project and we’re all looking forward to seeing people enjoying the bikes for the first time at the launch”.

Hiya everyone, it’s the Coliseum Theatre here.

You might have read about some of the activities you can get involved with at the Coliseum on Go! Oldham. We thought we’d follow this up with a blog to tell you a bit more about how you can get involved with what we do.

Does theatre spark your interest? We hope so, because there are many ways young people can get involved at the Coliseum from drama workshops to experiencing live performances.

A Coliseum production will cost you just £5.00 if you are under 26 – bargain or what! The production Private Lives opened last Friday. Check out the great reviews and photos on the Coliseum web-site www.coliseum.org.uk. So for a fiver why not book a ticket and go and see it with some friends.

Looking ahead, keep your eyes open for the new youth production Totally Over You opening at the beginning of March. The play is all about people’s obsession with fame and celebrity. Talent and intellect doesn’t matter - it’s more important to be seen hanging around on the arm of a footballer or member of a famous boyband. Find out more at www.coliseum.org.uk/whats-on/?event=totally-over-you

Totally Over You has been designed and will be performed by members of groups that meet at the Oldham Coliseum Theatre, Theatre LAB and DigiLAB. Both groups help young people aged 13 – 25 years explore theatre, performance, media, dance, new technology and creativity. TheatreLAB focuses on the theatrical side of performance, giving participants the chance to develop their performances skills and create a main stage production. DigiLAB works alongside TheatreLAB but looking more closely at how digital technology can be used in performance.

Find out more about getting involved with the Coliseum at www.coliseum.org.uk/get-involved/get-involved-at-the-coliseum/young-people or contact the Education Department on 0161 785 7007 or at education@coliseum.org.uk

See you at the theatre.

Have you read Twilight?

Have you read Twilight?

Oldham Sixth Form student Abbie Hickling gives her verdict on what makes Stephanie Meyer’s teen vampire book such a success.

Twilight sold one million copies in its first two years of being published and broke Waterstones record for the fastest time to sell a million copies.

Abbie read the book as part of Oldham’s Favourite Read, a celebration of books giving you the chance to share your thoughts, reviews and comments on ten of the hottest books selected by Oldham Libraries.

Abbie said“I thought the book was a really good book and a very good read. It was well written and the story was very appealing to its target audience. The characters were also very appealing and written well. The only problem that I had when reading the book was the idea that vampires sparkle in the sunlight, I think the book would have been even better if they still burnt in the sun and the crests that they wore were to protect them from the sun.

I think Stephanie Meyers’ idea that they go to school and have jobs and drink animal blood instead of human blood was very good and made the book more interesting to read, and made the idea of star crossed lovers who are different species even better.

All in all I thought that Twilight was an interesting and well written book that I would recommend anybody to read.”

Abbie is part of the multi-media reading group, Culture Corner, at Oldham Sixth Form College.

Have your say! What do you think of twilight? Share your thoughts on twilight and loads of other books as part of Oldham’s Favourite Read. Find out more at www.oldham.gov.uk/favourite-read.
